Recommended Posts

Hey,

I joined a local police explore program, and you get tazed and mased. So I was wondering if anyone knows what it feels like? ( rated by the pain 1-10, 10 being HELL!!! :raucher: )

Would have no idea, would like to try being mazed some time though looks like a cool experience. I do know the pain can be hell. We had a tv program here where they recruited new police officers. They were being mazed too, they were in an awfull lot of pain for about 15 minutes.

"The tazer fells like a F**** lightning bolt going through you and it burns like H***" my friend said, and mace burns your throat and eyes so be sure you rince your face off very very very well.

on 1-10 my friend made it seem like a mabie 9 but mostly it will differ for your size.

Okay, I'm not a cop, but I do know lots about it and have a lot of friends who are.

Mace: do not use water, use milk, and when washing it off in the shower, cover your family jewels or you'll be screaming like someone just kicked you there.

Taser: Ride the lightning, 10 - 15 seconds I think of no body control and darts being in you I'd imagine that would hurt too. Lots of pros and cons to consider about both.

My uncle is a captain with the los angeles county sheriff. He said when your in the field and you use mace close up you will get splash back so be careful with that stuff.

Here is a website of whats in mace. http://www.safeshow.com/pepper_spray.html

hope this helps?

In the los angeles county fire department explores we get sprayed to.

[like Taylor said] wash it out with milk and watch your jewels.

as far as tazers I have no idea

I didn't think FD explorers or PD/SO explorers are tased/maced. I'm joining the explorers very soon. Ricky, I've got a lot of friends who are with LASD and LAPD. Thats cool.

Same for bean bag guns. I saw a biog boy, like 350 lbs on cops once get shot like 4 times with bean bags. He barley flinched but when they taxed him he crippled instantly.

I have never been mased but it does seem to last about 15-20 minutes for the worst part. I have been tazed with a small weak tazer. It wasnt that bad. Bad enough you dont want to sit there and take it(but you proabably could if you really wanted). As I said though it was a pretty weak tazer.

I got maced and i rate it 9. Its not really painful, but its very irritating. Your eye burns and swells up, your breathing becomes difficult and rapid, and it sucks. My face was swollen when i got maced, and it took me a good 1 hour to have the pain go away.

Tazer? No i haven't and i plan not to, but from my perspective view, its a 10. Lets just say its one big giant muscle spasm.

Yeah, but to my knowledge, most, if not all who were tased and died had a heart condition or something else that if tased would cause the death.

Bottom line... cooperate with the police, especially if you've got heart problems!

That is a bit harsh considering that sometimes the taser is used a bit too fast for the given situation, just because such a weapon (yes it is a weapon) is advertised and marketed as less than lethal does not mean that it cannot kill, far too often people who have no business using the weapon end up with it and they use it believing that the weapon is harmless. The simple fact is there are many cases where people have an undiagnosed medical condition that could make them more vulnerable to such a weapon. You can't answer for that section of america, what about the poor diabetic who is having an insulin shock episode that gets tasered because he is not of his normal mind and dies, who is to blame for that? I know the rant is a bit off topic but I could not let that one go because I look outwardly healthy but chances are high that a taser will kill me if it hit me for anything more than 5 seconds.

The weapon simply hurts to no ungodly end and makes your body involuntarilly do things, which is where the problems come in when you have a rookie or an adrenaline fueled officer who neglects to stop the juice within a reasonable time, you can always hit the suspect again if they do not comply but one should always give them time to comply before they zap them repeatedly.

Yeah, but to my knowledge, most, if not all who were tased and died had a heart condition or something else that if tased would cause the death.

And that is why tasers should have timers, in which they shut off the current, whether the trigger is down or now...

On a different note as for pepper spray, it really depends on your diet to tell the truth. Among the millions of people that are extremely vulnerable to this, there are the several who are born completely unaffected by things like mace... Then there is my kind of people, everyone knows when you do something enough your body develops a resistance to it, so you have to move up a step, like physical training, or for some people, drugs... Well that is also true for spicy foods. Some people (myself included) love spicy food, and eat it when ever they can get a chance. Eventually though normal spicy food becomes dull, so you have to crank it up a notch... I have had to do this an insane amount of times, and now getting sprayed with pepper spray, is like taking a spoonful of some really spicey hot sauce for a normal person. It stings a bit, but I get over it, and I deal with it. Now of course, if you used enough pepperspray on me, like any person I would cringe and give in, but a simple spray like what most people do would'nt be that bad...

Incase you want to know how I know this, I figured I would try some peppersypray on myself, it isn't that bad, but I do not recommend it for anyone, as you could easily cause yourself to choke up, and end up in hospital... I can take a very HIGH amount of SCU (measurement of how spicy somehting is) so, this is the only reason I can try something like this, do not try it yourself.

EDIT - THIS COMMENT IS IN NO WAY INTENTIONALLY BIASED TOWARDS ANYONE of any nature/employment/experience/non-experience/all it is is a pretty standard view of what can happen and the reality of using less then lethal force...

If moderators find this offensive then please warn be and delete this comment - Thank you...

Before anyone in this forum begins to even speak about use of force, abusiveness thereof, or consequences thereof let me paint a picture for you...

Just think about chasing an adrenaline-juiced human gazelle down streets, over fences, around trash cans, dropped bicycles, in backyards for 600-1000 meters, then having them turn on you like a rabid pit bull and start a fight making the urban steeplechase you just completed seem like a stroll out to the mailbox, when you fight that guy he has the advantage of being charged up with an illegal chemical cocktail, fueled by fear & driven by blind hatred... unrestrained in ferocity by social conscience or anticipation of ever answering for his own crime. Yet you must adhere to your use of force policy, your "the good guy" you know, If you win, YOU MUST CALMLY cease fighting the moment his resistance stops. If he wins, maybe he gains control of your pepper spray, your baton, and perhaps your sidearm. Not to mention the fact that us cops get coughed, sneezed, spat, pissed puked and bled on routinely, by people who look like actors from a bad B-grade zombie movie...Then you have 100% of the people you encounter that are Innocent... Yet somehow they end up turning on you like a raging mountain lion, and somehow you must protect your own life, and still be "the good guy" while backup is no where in sight, He has friends, and your the authority figure here... and instead of helping him with his "problem" whether it be domestic abuse, drugs, child porn, assault, robbery, whatever the case, You in turn being the good guy must restrain him and the countdown begins until who ultimately is the true winner, only difference in winning and losing is that the winner (if its you) will most likely wear a nice pair of shiny bracelets and be drowned in paperwork, facing a possible suspension because his family & friends are the eye witnesses, of your self defense which in their eyes became cold blood murder, all having testimonies that line up about as much as the swerved lines on the road because they only had "2 beers" Yet the lawyers accept them...Then you have the media painting this Picasso style painting of how power hungry our police and law enforcement really is And that cops name is blasphemed for ages to come along with the department...If your the loser, well, you can count on being frozen within hours, along with a nice Y cut in your chest because the coroner has taken out your organs to determine true cause of death. Meanwhile the courts have discharged the man/woman who did become the Winner, & therefore he is released on some legal loophole that then becomes a clown-car to the legal system leading millions more through the same place, & now your wife and kids are left behind with that maniac still on the loose...

Let me just say - Wear the badge before anyone assumes things.

BTW - Tazer sucks worse then the OC spray..

Tip = After getting maced - DO NOT take a shower for at least a day & wash your face at least 5 times the day before

To my other officers out there - SEMPER FI

he is right you should not asume things about the police field. We learened in junior police acadimy that you can say all you want until you experance the job itself. Ok now that thats over if you have ever been hit wth store bought pepper spray it will be much stronger as police pepper spray is law enforcement only.

Thanks Sheriff and jab, beat me to it.

Newfoundking.. Tasers have sort of a timer on them, from what I've heard it's anywhere between 10 - 30 seconds.

Sheriff, thanks for your service too.

MikeyPI, due to your health issues, I guess you wont be running from the police any time soon eh? I have seen SO MANY police and other innocent civilians saved by a taser because a cop was tasing a suspect than I've seen people killed by a taser.

The simple is the question isnt who or why should use the things, the problem is for example SECURITY can gain access to them, they do not undergo thorough training on how to use them safely. Just because someone is verbally belligerent does not give you the right to escalate the situation with a weapon such as a taser, from time to time this does happen unfortunately, be it from a LEO or a Security officer. Those are the cases that I can't justify. When someone's physical safety is danger you must decide using your best judgement the best course of action, sometimes the taser is the answer, sometimes it is not. It just seems that in recent times many people who carry them turn to them first over other options, some do the right thing and guage their response accoringly.

My health issues which have not be definitavely found to be problematic, may very well be there, if they are then tasing me for more than 5 seconds would likely kill me yes.. Aside from that Law enforcement would not chase me anyway. I have seen both sides of the taser's use appropriately and misused because of it's convenience in compelling a suspect to comply. Use of excessive force regardless of the reason should never be justified regardless of how you try to go about doing so. Generally LEO's do well about using the weapon correctly, it is generally security officers that tend to fail to follow any common sense and taser people with little cause.

I am done commenting on this issue, I just wished to elaborate on my view, I was not in any way going after the police in particular, so if it came off that way, like sheriff I have to correct that error.
