D.C. Fire Engine Transports Patient to Hospital

Recommended Posts

Might be the rural EMSer in me, but this sounds like a terrible idea.  Seven miles is nothing, regardless of traffic status.  Providing that the engine was paramedic-staffed, as stated in the article, meds could have been administered to correct the seizure, and then the child would not have been in an imminently life-threatening situation.  Then, transport could have been delayed until the medic unit arrived.  Transport in a medic unit would have allowed for transport in a position of comfort greater than available in an engine, as well as more advanced techniques to be performed.

Just a note on the meds, typically speaking, at least from my experience, if there is medication on board to deal with seizures, it often is not able to be administered to a toddler safely. When the equipment is not available to provide the immediate help, then sometimes you've gotta sacrifice comfort for life saving skills.
