Truck 11 is one of the really old ones actually. It's a 1996 Simon-LTI (ladder towers Inc) QS-104 100' Aerial Ladder Truck Cummins Diesel. They recently purchased a pretty good handful of 2006 ALF-LTI's to start knocking most of the 10+ year old trucks out. Here's the cab of Truck 90, one of the newest deliveries. Hand crews are one of the most intrinsic parts of wildland firefighting. Their job is to march in to the fire and remove all of the brush down to base dirt level and build a line to stop the forward progression. Once that is done, they then go in and mop up the fire, dig out the hot spots and do all the grunt work utilizing hand tools and chainsaws. Type I crews are main body, and go direct attack on the fire. Type II crews, usually made of 18 yos going through the wildland firefighting program at an acadamy or college are solely for mop up and cannot work around active flames. The forest service crews are primarily Hot Shot (T1) and acad/college crews (T2). California Dept Of Forestry crews are all non-violent felon inmate's assigned to Cal. Dept of Corrections camps which gives those men and women a 2nd chance, a great skill, teaches them discipline and allows to to really do a great thing while limiting costs to the state. LACoFD, being the designated contract agency for State Responsibility Area land in the county of Los Angeles runs their own camp program with multiple camps through out the county. Some are inmate crews, others are staffed by Fire Suppression Aids. FSA's are usually 18-25yos who have completed a wildland program/academy and its a good way to get a foot in the door of LACoFD and eventually being hired as a firefighter. LAFD has 1 type II crew made of explorers as a way to give the kids a little experience in a safe environment, but because it's run by an on-duty FF, they only respond when he isnt already assigned to the incident. Great fire too, got to put in a ton of leg work and it was fun working a city fire again. at least 10 to 15 LAFD engines, 2 brush patrols, dozer team wasnt used but was on scene, 1 Light force, couple of ambo's, LA GSD, Park Rangers, Arson, CHP, 1 LACoFD fire hawk, and 2 LACoFD Camp crews (which is why I was there) One thing of note, LA GSD PD has 2 chargers, and have rejected them outright. They'll be sticking with their SUV's. The chargers are just getting no love out here in the west coast.

You won't find that either. All of their screens have a transparent privacy shield on them that makes photographing near impossible and difficult to see from off-axis. On the 16th of August is an LAPD Open House in wilshire that I may go to, but I will def be at the one Oct 17th in Northeast. I might be able to wrangle a few special shots that I can't get while the unit is in service. You'll probably never find shots of it in service due to the data and information displayed on it. That's why the dept goes to such measures as installing the quick black out, and privacy screens.

By police computer, are you referring to the in car mobile data computer? If so, it's just a standard Del D610 laptop with an LAPD skin on the top, sprint wireless network card, and a federal signal bendy light on the right side.

You are. I mean, I don't know another way of saying that unfortunately. The only medic response from LASD would be onboard Air 5, which is utilized for special rescue needs. But even then, by the time it gets on scene, LACoFD medics are already with the patient and have worked him up to be ready to be lifted out or transported. Helo's, for all of their speed and worth, still aren't fast enough to beat the first in fire companies. They make up for that in their ability to fly over traffic from the scene to the trauma center though!

Like I said before, the ambulance is just a gear hauler, mainly for dive equipment an such. I'm not quite sure what you mean by inefficient. LACoFD and a contract ambulance will standby and assist the LASD during tactical operations by staging outside of the area and respond in if needed. Remember tactical medics are just that, tactical. They are there to provide instantaneous life saving support until the patient can be moved to an area of safety where Fire/EMS personnel can work him up and transport him. In truth, they might actually find their skills tested on an operation once every few years if that, but due to the danger involved in most ops, it tends to be a good idea to have an engine company, medics, and an ambulance standing by for one never knows what might happen operation. Remember, Tactical EMS is very different from standard EMS, and their mission and skill set is just to keep that victim safe and alive until they can be worked up by a full EMS crew and transported outside of the danger zone. They don;t carry the gear, drugs, and many other things a full EMS crew will, just enough things for their specific need such as an intubation kit. The one benefit of having ESD medics assigned to SWAT, as opposed to members of the SWAT team paramedic rated is that like any other skill set, if you don't use it, you lose it. One of the complications of Tactical EMS is that they don't run medical aids, they don't deal with EMS on a day in day out basis, and they tend to focus as SWAT first, medics much lower down, and the quality has been shown to decline even with refresher courses. ESD medics on the other hand are constantly dealing with rescues and other critical ems situations while assigned to Air 5 and keep their skills current and fresh in many ways. But even then, their focus is on immediate stabilization and rescue, not really treat and transport. More often then not, LACoFD medics will join them on a rescue to work the patient up during transport if taken by Air 5. Just ask yourself this, do you really want or need 2 specially trained LASD ESD Medics who are dealing with a downed officer after a bad operation, all amped up and worked up, having to transport the patient as well? Or does it make more sense for them to get the victim to safety and let the LACoFD guys handle him and transport?

I was hoping someone else would step in before now but I guess I will... A few points worth mentioning just off the cuff since I don't have a lot of time to get into detail.. The ambulance is not an an ambulance, it was used, and may still be used, to carry extra gear, especially the dive equipment. It is NOT set up for medical transport, at least as far as the times I've ever seen it. Can anyone point to any info that contradicts that? The medics are all part of the ESD, and on swat operations will wear standard SWAT tactical gear and usually hang in the back in case the operation goes bad. Nothing really identifies them as special except a tiny patch similar to the SAR emt patch Otherwise they wear gear similar to the Search and Rescue guys, with Olive Drab jumpsuits, just subdued OD patches The other major truck is assigned to Air 5 and is the support vehicle for it. Their job is to just immediately triage, stabilize and move the patient to a safer area for the LACoFD (or other jurisdiction) fire dept medics to treat and transport. LAPD keeps one of their Armored vehicles (Rescue 4) set up as an ambulance of sort, with the ability to load injured civilians and sworn personnel and keep working on them until they are out of the danger area and then transfer them to fire dept medics and ambulance. I believe LASD has one of their ARV's set up similarly. The major difference is oxygen tanks, bls/als gear bags, and room for backboards instead of just being loaded up with swat gear. To start forward thinking game usage, you need to start thinking about: How do you identify the LASD ESD medic from the regular LASD swat officers when they look the same in real life? Are you going to add dive capabilities to them? Will you be able to script the ability to change from swat medic gear to dive gear at the truck, similar to the way the FF changes into SCBA? are you planning on making a full LASD swat mod/submod with LASD armored vehicles too? That's the beauty of the game! There are thousands of answers to this question, and you need to find the best way for you. The basics: Fire fighting vehicles to extinguish the flames Ambulances to transport the wounded Crane to remove wreckage Vehicle with jump bag and extrication tools Engineer vehicle and PD helps to block the street traffic out front. How many, and what kind, type and how, well that's all up to you.

The LA Mod is a modification to the original game. You do not need it, but it will convert the game from a european/german focus to one that realistically reflects the Los Angeles, CA area. You can download it from lamod.emergency-planet.com/ Hoppah, and many others have put forth a great deal of time and energy to fundamentally change the game and add new features, units, and missions not found in the original game. 911 FR and EM4 are the same game, with 911 FR having the english files included. EM4 Deluxe adds an additional map, missions, and freeplay events, but is not available in English. By adding LA Mod to EM4 Deluxe, much of it becomes english enough to be playable though. Is it worth it? Look around the board, the screen shots, and the community and you'll see that even though the game is quite old in many regards, it still has a very vibrant community playing it and loving it. Whether its for you or not, well, that's up to you.

And no, in high school I purposely graduated 3rd in my class to avoid having to give that speech, I figured student body pres and all the other crap I did was more then enough. But unlike the original poster, who claims to be a PIO, I am actually S-403 certified and have had the joy of working in Public Information and Public Affairs. You can tell those who actually are PIO/FIO's (fire information officers), we tend to have the gift of gab and express ourselves in a way befitting our department, and our service, while at the same time doing our best to educate and inform the audience we are speaking to. Alas, this is the internet though, and the original poster is more then welcome to adopt the name of a proud organization and outfit like the FDNY Rescue squads, as well as claim to be a member of whatever he wises, but his actions and behavior speak volumes about his actual qualifications and accomplishments in life. All Fire Chief SUV's have custom built cabinetry in the back that includes maps, radios, white boards, forms, and a whole mess of gear, books, equipment, and yes, even telephones and fax machines for some of them! Everything you need to run an incident, plus the chiefs own personal protective gear is shoved in the back of that suv. Having watched the film, the NIH dept has chosen to go with a custom built slide out cabinet that is pretty popular. That allows you to access gear from all three sides, and more room for more members of the incident to function in a single spot. Remember, at a large incident you'll have the Incident Commander, Operations Chief, medical unit leader, law enforcement agency rep, and usually reps from other agencies as well. And it's handheld and MOBILE radios, cb radios are citizens band, i think we've had that discussion before.. ah yes, here it is. With many departments, you'll have multiple radios in multiple bands so they can communicate with other agencies (for example LACoFD is on 470mhz for Command channels, and 154mhz for tactical/fireground channels, and LAFD is on 800mhz for their traffic, and Burbank, Glendale and others are on a special trunked system) as well as monitor the incident traffic going on. A major structure fire in LA will be assigned a Command frequency, one or more tactical frequencies, and additional frequencies as needed for staging, RIC (rapid intervention company), and medical unit. So many radios, so many chiefs, so many people trying to keep everything straight and figure out who goes where and does what and when. Thats why you get many scenes like this: With a pull out, it allows people to gather around on all 3 sides instead of bunching up.

Yep, Marines during the Clinton era. Back when some people on this board were still a twinkle in their parents eye! My best advice to one and all, live your life, explore the world. There are countries, communities, cultures and experiences out there waiting for everyone. You will never be able to appreciate what you have, and those who have sacrificed to give it to you, until you have seen what the rest of the world has to offer. There are gorgeous places, and places that will break your heart. There are amazing things to experience and explore that defy description. Help people, help yourself, or just keep an open mind, open eyes, and open ears. For some, join the military if that is what you want to do, for others, grab a backpack and have mommy and daddy support you as you trek across Europe or South America or India, and for the rest, find something in between! Study abroad programs are always amazing if you can afford it and wel worth it. But no matter what you do study hard and never ever be a potato. A potato just sits there and grows in the same spot until it either dies or someone else chops it up and eats it for lunch. School teaches you a lot of junk that doesnt matter, but the one lesson to take from it, especially high school, is HOW to learn. Think of it like practice, because the easier you're able to understand new things and express your ideas and opinions without sounding like a total jackass like the original poster, the more you will get out of life and hopefully avoid becoming a potato!

I'm particularly fond of Canada, but having lived and travelled all over, I can say that in the end, I go where the weather doesn't! I like not having to own a jacket, or coat, or sweater, or umbrella. I like having 1 wardrobe 365 days of the year. I like the fact that I never check the weather channel before planning an activity cause its probably gonna be Clear, Sunny, and Warm in the summer, and Clear, Sunny, and Cool in the winter. Now if Canada invaded a place with a nice Mediterranean climate (which is what SoCal is), then I'd be more inclined to partake in all of the joys of Canada like... Hockey... Free Healthcare... and rabid devotion to Maple Leaves! But alas, I'm just not a polar bear. Oh and just for info, I'm on standby to go up to Kelowna. I was in BC and Manitoba twice last year, hoping to get up there at least once this season as either assigned overhead or a shadow/exchange position.

As for the rest of your post, I'm guessing you haven't really lived in a country where freedom is truly limited. In the 80s, I recall with horror the plight of East Germans being shot by East German Border Guards, not for trying to sneak INTO, but just trying to leave! How's that for Immigration law? American's are free to go anywhere they want anytime they want, doors are wide open. In North Korea, China, and Iran not only is the media censored to only report what the government wants reported, but the internet is censored and there are no rights to privacy or speech at all. Remember Tinamen square? The images of a single man standing up to a tank shall forever be burned in the minds of all who are old enough to remember that. Over 2500 Chinese died in those protests that were sparked by the death of an influential pro-democracy leader. When I joined the military, I had the fortunate experience to spend time in Central America, the Balkans, Africa, and the Middle East. I remember how even the simple act of getting running water to your house could not be accomplished in parts of eastern Europe unless you bribed the right people, and people lined up for food rations that were eventually stolen by thugs in the "Special Police." Here in the US, the media takes great pleasure and makes most of its money from criticizing the government, heck Cronkite said it best when he said sensationalist news was nothing new, papers have always been just a step above tabloids, and many times, a far step below with yellow journalism and propoganda. Having lived in Australia, Canada, and spent short times in both western and eastern europe, I can tell you that there is no place else in the world I'd rather live, or that I feel more free. I've seen oppression, I've witnessed horrors and executions, true corruption on a grand scale and the pros and cons of the European way of doing things compared to the American ways. Ami, I know you are young, and angry at something, but you're also dead wrong. But the good news is, you are MORE THEN WELCOME to go anywhere in the world you'd like, and that is a freedom that Americans enjoy that many others can never imagine. Join the Peace Corps, Join a church group, there are thousands of groups that will let you travel the world and help people who will teach you about the horrors of living in a land of true corruption and abuse. We have our bad side, we have our good side, in the end, we, along with much of the western world, have a lot to be proud of. Your privacy is respected, you do not need to live in fear of your local or federal authorities or your military, you do not have to pay extortion rates for basic things as food and water, and you are free to learn, live, work, play, and even if you don't, there is a strong welfare system so that you can survive! Just remember, we can always do better, no matter where in the world you live, but the trick is to actually do it and not get caught up in the plethora of bullshit, mis-truths, exagerations and crap that will be fed you by the truck load. Stay in school, work hard to understand, not just parrot back what is taught, and look into groups that will help you explore the world outside of your city. They exist, and you can even earn a good summers wage by helping those who need it the most and by helping yourself learn the truth about the world as a whole.

This is something that is a pet peeve of mine. Little stupid children who didn't pay attention in school and have no idea what the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights really say or mean! I've bit my tongue on this over and over again on this board and others, but it drives me NUTS at how some people pervert the first amendment! Here is the actual amemdment with emphasis added That's all it says, that CONGRESS, and by extension, the government may not take away the right to free speech. It says NOTHING about private or public enterprise, groups, or anything else. In the United States, citizens have NO protection or right to express themselves against the rules of an employer, group, club, organization, that shall limit such thing. There are of course minor exceptions to every rule, such as the whistleblower act, but even that has very specific legal hoops one must jump through to gain protection from retaliation. I'm sure there will be little 12 year old armchair lawyers and civics professors on here who will decry the rule of freedom of speech is absolute, just like the whiney original poster, but the fact is, it truly isn't. If i remember right, America actually ranks 36th in the world in regards to censorship due to censoring things such as obscenity, libel, defamation and seditious speech. To summarize, freedom of speech isn't limitless, even in America, and Mr FDNY1Rescue, I strongly encourage you to study harder, talk less, and maybe you won't consistently make a fool of yourself.
