1. Many people use a program called FRAPS that is well known in the gaming community for displaying frame rates, capturing video, and capturing screenshots. I've also used the Screenshot feature in OneNote and SnagIt for this game and various others, so it is you preference. Mike
2. UPDATED 07/16/2008: Tons of stuff II @ VNY Open House! Another biggie for everyone to Enjoy! Been busting through these pics left and right and todays update is 96 shots from the same show. Included are LAFD's Helitender 1 and 2, RA 881, Reserve Squad 87, LAFD Medics on a John Deere Special Event MedBed ATV, and Air Ops water dropping demonstration, and shots of Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3, Fire 4, and Fire 6! Enjoy!
3. Nope... think larger Another hint: It's not a standard patrol car but is still in use today for DARE and Recruitment which is why the funky paint schemes. You can usually find it out at DUI check points as the staff car or parked for pursuits. A lot of guys still love the way the old caprices handle. This map might help too
4. *looks out his window* Still nice. Usually nice. I wonder why we pay weather people in LA..... How hard is it to just look out the window each morning all year round and go yep, another nice day..... Just... something to ponder.
5. Nopers so far, but you're all getting close... well simply by process of elimination at least LOL Afterall, we only have 58 in this state
6. It is one of the largest Sheriffs Departments in California, we're not talking Alpine or anything here.
7. Correct, while the accurate files are located on that sight, it has been a big topic of discussion on the elightbars.org forums and elsewhere that the web designer or whoever is in charge of the FedSig sight, put the wrong files with the wrong siren. While this won't help you for that sight, here is a break down of what each dept/apparatus uses. The LAPD went from the Unitrol 480K to the Omega and is now equipping most of their units with Federal Signal Smart siren SS201 series with six button control head . Only tones available are Wail and Yelp. While airhorn is available it is never used. Just hit the horn ring to switch from wail to yelp and back. Just like the LAPD, the LASD has used mostly the Unitrol and Touchmaster but is now switching over to the Smart Siren, specifically the SS2000-LASD. The CHP uses the Federal Signal Smart Siren attached to a GE S825 head. It sounds different with a longer low end and a lower high end. LAFD Engines and Large rigs have mechanical Federal Q sirens and Motorola Radio heads with built in sirens that sound identical to the LAPD smart sirens. They also have real airhorns, not electronic ones. Ambulances have a Timberwolf siren and the Motorola Radio siren and real airhorns. LAFD Chiefs, EMS cars, and brush patrols, use either the touchmaster siren or the motorola siren depending on year bought. Chiefs have real airhorns mounted under their bumper. LACoFD squads use the touchmaster siren with real airhorns, not electronic. USFS is the Touchmaster or Unitrol 80k FBI uses what appeared to be a typical Smart siren on their SUVs as well. --- Also remember, only the Wail and Yelp are legal tones in this state. Electronic airhorns are rarely heard if ever on police vehicles because of the way the horn ring is set up. Mike
8. Nope and Nope. Not in San Diego County and not even in LA County. Obviously it is in California though
9. LAFD gear is standard though. Helmets are color coded to denote rank, not level of medical training. White Helmets are Chief officers, Orange Helmets are Captain, Yellow Helmets are Engineer and Firefighter. Blue helmets are the only thing that is truly identifiable as Paramedic but unfortunately, these are used only by the Single Function Resource medics who have no fire training and are not allowed to partake in any fire suppression. Jackets are the same as well regardless of rank. Same color striping and reflective gear regardless of rank or position. The air tanks are identical as well for department commonality. As you can see in this photo, the only way to tell these two guys are paramedics is 1) they're leaning on the ALS gear, and 2) the guy on the left is a Single Function Resource medic. If it wasn't for the gear and the blue helmet, they'd be unidentifiable as medics from the rest of the Firefighters on scene. Mike

11. LAFD uses Morning Pride for turnout gear that meets specific LAFD specs like no zipper along the leg (long discussion can be found elsewhere on the net regarding the wearing of station boots with turnout gear and why they banned the zipper), and Transcon which is now Elbeco makes the Brush gear. Also I don't know about old, I believe it was 2006 when most guys got new gear. It just gets used a lot.
12. Please see this post by Hoppah.
13. Can you post a picture of this? I've never had it happen either, and I've tried sending it all over both the deluxe and FR map with out any problems. Mike
14. I see you've edited your original reply but if you'd like to know more about that car and it's owner, read this amusing article from Copcar . com. You can see all of the changes Johan Wiegman done to it over the years, including adding the galls 911 logo on the back which is what is seen in the video. That was probably the biggest give away since LAPD, LASD and other agencies in Cali use this logo which is procured through the State of California's Dept. of General Services, Telecommunications Division. Mike
15. Wow, Ok..... Let me say this as clearly as I can. The smart car in the videos you saw has a DUTCH license plate. The people in the video are speaking dutch. The title of the video even mention this is at a car show in the Netherlands. Look at the response video, the license plates are NOT from California of any of the vehicles on the street... or from the US for that matter. Here is a close up still image of the car that shows the license plate better. In Europe, many people like to create fake LAPD, CHP, NYPD and other american police cars, take them to car shows, and it is all in good fun. Here are some other examples: A Swiss NYPD replica Smart car in NYPD colors from Holland To learn more about the replica you seem so fascinated by, contact YoMusic on youtube. He seems to be very big in the American Police replicas in Europe scene. This is not an official LAPD car. This is not a car even operated in the United States. I hope that helps clear things up. Mike

17. Heh, I'll never reveal my secrets Let's see if anyone can figure out what department this Caprice belongs to:
18. Please see this tutorial on editing your freeplay files.
19. Before I start my reply, I'd like to repeat something from the LA Mod FAQ and the Front page of this thread: and What does this mean? It means that above all else, Hoppah has said from the very beginning that he wants to keep the LA Mod accurate and realistic above all else. There are a few fictional units he has added because he thinks they are nifty or that they are needed for the game, and that is his prerogative. But for the most part, Realistic and Realism are defined as: portraying an object like it is in everyday life. In this case, we're talking about everyday life in Los Angeles. Please keep that in mind. Now then, in regards to more Dodge Chargers As mentioned multiple times before, there are no chargers used by the City of Los Angeles Police or Fire Departments. As of right now, only the smaller municipal departments are slowly rolling them out, but they are still a rarity in this area. LAPD has a few chargers for testing, but it may be as long as 2 years before the first ones are purchased for street duty, and none are in the 2009 budget. In regards to the unmarked charger, Topfuzz, What do you mean by outdated? As of todays date, all unmarked LAPD cars are crown vics. To me that sounds like the crown vics are up to date and contemporary. In the future we might see undercover chargers, and the CHP is looking at using them for that duty, but for now, the Crown Vic is still the current car of service in the fleets. As cool as having a blinky light brigade charger might or might not be, as nifty as the videos of other cars may or may not be, and as much as you'd love to see cars you are familiar with in your home town or area, remember the first principal of realism and functionality. The Camaro was replaced because the model needed to be redone and the game needed a special car to replace it, so Hoppah took the time to create and add the charger to fill that until the camaro can be properly addressed. To just replace the unmarked crown vic, which is the current vehicle in service with an unmarked charger, which isn't used by the LAPD at all isn't the right direction. As said above, the EMS Captains drive crown vics, the LAFD has NO intention of purchasing chargers at all. There is current discussion to give the EMS Captains hand me down SUVs once the new ones are in service, but even that has been met with issues due to the wear and tear on the SUVs already. --- Now for some other stuff Since Hoppah didn't address this, neat video, freaking blinding ass car, but remember this is the LA Mod. There is a reason Hoppah has locked the models, and made it the way he has. I believe his words before was that he didn't want thousands of people modifying his work for various reasons, but wanted them to be happy with the hard work and effort he and his team have put forth. This is not the Do-It-Yourself mod, this is not the How-Many-Lights-Can-We-make mod, nor is this the Make-Your-Own-Home-Town mod. This is the LA Mod. You are more then welcome to edit and change anything you want for your personal use according to his previous statements, but that is not the goal nor priority he has set. This is correct, more often then not, PD will just sit there with the red and blue steadys on. They will rarely (usually by accident) drive in this mode though, and most fleets tie it to some type of rear flasher as well. That's why if it isn't set up that way in 1.6, 1.7 will have it so that they will be a special light so they are activated when you turn on the arrow bar. This will allow the unit to sit with the arrow bar on, steady burns on, no other emergency lights on, and when it drives off, both will turn off. You are correct again. All LAFD and LACoFD Firefighters are trained to at least the EMT Level. Most, and I stress MOST, Paramedics are Fire rated. For a long time, there was a group of Paramedics in the LAFD that were not fire rated and were known as Single-Function Resources. They were JUST paramedics with no firefighting training. For the last, oh... god, what, 10 years now(?) SFRs have dwindled significantly to the point where they're a rarity in the department. They are characterized by distinctive BLUE helmets versus the yellow helmet with tiny PARAMEDIC label on it. While this has been discussed and thought over quite a bit, so far a solution to the Paramedic issue hasn't come up yet. Maybe someone can suggest one? The problem lies in being able to tell the difference between the paramedic and the standard firefighter by looking at it. In the LAFD the only visbile difference is a very small tag on the side of the helmets that would not be visible in game. You bassically have the following men and women right now. 1) Standard firefighter in turnout gear - Trained to EMT level, has ability to Stabilize 2) SCBA Firefighter in turnout gear - Trained to EMT level, has ability to stabilize and is wearing SCBA 3) Paramedic - has the ability to heal 4) EMT - has the ability stabilize and transport via stretcher Eventually what I'd like to see would be 1) Standard firefighter in turnout gear - Trained to EMT level, has ability to Stabilize 2) SCBA Firefighter in turnout gear - Trained to EMT level, has ability to stabilize and is wearing SCBA 3) Paramedic - has the ability to heal 4) Paramedic in Turnout Gear/SCBA - Has the ability to heal and fight fires with SCBA but is noticeably different visually. Problems would be when you select all firefighters to attack a building, they would not be selected. One thing NO one wants is for all firefighters to be able to turn into medics and vice versa. 4) EMT - has the ability stabilize and transport via stretcher 5) EMS Captain - Wears the EMS captain uniform (orange helmet with EM# on side), turnout or brush jacket, and uniform pants. Has the ability to call for additional Units. Paramedics in Los Angeles do not call for a coroner. You are correct in saying that it makes no sense to transport a deceased person back to the hospital and that is why there is a coroner in the game. LA Protocols are that if a person is declared deceased, they then determine if they feel it is suspicious or not. If suspicious they notify dispatch and request Police to respond. If they suspect it to be natural causes, they notify dispatch who then makes all of the appropriate notifications including the Los Angeles County Coroners office. One of the main tenants of the game is that YOU are the dispatcher. When you have a dead body, you pull up the appropriate menu and send the coroner to the call as needed just like in real life. One other thing to note is that you cannot call units from off map, like a tow truck or a Coroners van. It takes a couple of extra clicks, but it's not hard to send the tow and the coroner to the incident. As stated in my signature: Misinformation is wrong or inaccurate information that is erroneous and can result from ignorance. LAPD has a very large Bicycle Patrol program run out of the Metropolitan Bureau that can be found throughout most of LA's denser areas. From the business districts of the Wilshire area, to Venice Beach, to Hollywood, and Ventura Blvd. We are blessed in LA of having nice weather almost all year round that allows for bicycle patrols to work in heavy pedestrian areas where vehicles cannot.
20. Often people ask how to change events in freeplay to change the game to fit their style of playing more then the original game did. This tutorial will break down the important lines and teach you what things to change and what effect they have. As always BACKUP YOUR ORIGINAL FILES FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next, navigate to the folder your game is installed in and go to \Mods\Los Angeles Mod v1.6\Specs The files are in xml format which is just a text document and easily modifiable. Depending on your computer skill level, you can either open the files directly into notepad by right clicking the file and selecting "Open With" and selecting notepad or wordpad, OR you can change the filename from .xml to .txt There are 4 files you can change to affect freeplay depending on which version of the game you have. fp_params_challenge.xml <-- Changes the Freeplay Challenge mode in EM4 and FR fp_params_endless.xml <-- Changes the Freeplay Endless mode in EM4 and FR fp_params_challenge_d.xml <-- Changes the Freeplay Challenge mode in Deluxe fp_params_endless_d.xml <-- Changes the Freeplay Endless mode in Deluxe You can change all of the files or just the one of the mode you play the most. ------ <MinDurationBetweenEvents value = "30.0" /> This is the minimum duration between two events. If things are happening too quickly for you, or one on top of another, you can change this to whatever you'd like. Most people find 120 or 140 to be a comfortable setting <StartBudget value="150000"/> <MaxBudget value="400000"/> <Earnings value="30000"/> These are the initial amount of money you have, the max amount you can have, and how much you earn each time the game gives you your pay. Change these number to increase or decrease the amount you want. <InitialEventWaitDuration value="5.0"/> How long from the time the game starts until you get your first event. Some people like to increase this time so they can get their units on patrol and set up the map the way they like first. <starttime value="7:30"/> What time of day the game starts at. Change it to midnight or to noon or to any other time you wish. <TrainCycle value="240.0"/> <!-- in seconds --> How often the train comes through. If you find yourself frustrated by the train, you can set it to a high number like 9999.0 to see it less often. --------------------- Editing Events Some people only like fire events, some like police events, this section will break down an event and all of the factors you can change.
<EFPEventFall> <Enabled value = "1" /> <!-- AverageFrequency: average number of events per 10 minutes --> <AverageFrequency value = "0.4" /> <Worth value = "4.0" /> <SupervisorStart value = "ID_SUPERV_EVENT17" /> <SupervisorFinish value = "" /> </EFPEventFall>
This is a typical event for freeplay
<EFPEventFall> </EFPEventFall>
Opening and closing tags that describe the event itself. This would be a Fallen person medical aid.
<Enabled value = "1" />
1 is enabled, 0 is disabled. Like an on/off switch
<!-- AverageFrequency: average number of events per 10 minutes --> <AverageFrequency value = "0.4" />
This tag is debatable, many of us have noticed that incidents with a lower number happen more often then those with a higher number. Setting it to 0.0 also has the effect of disabling the incident. --- There are many other event tags, but for the most part they are self explanatory such as how long a person waits, how far they run, and whether or not they are armed. Another thing you can change is the weather.
<weather name="fair" changeduration="15.0" minduration="60" maxduration="180"> <fog intensity="0.0" color="ffffff"/> <rain intensity="0.0"/> <storm intensity="0.0" speed="0.0"/> <flash frequencyfactor="0.0"/> <sound name=""/> <sound2 name=""/> <transition state="cloudy" weight="1.5"/> <transition state="misty" weight="0.7"/> </weather>
You can see that for a nice day, all of the fog, rain, storm and everything is set to 0.0. It also shows that after that, it will transition to either cloudy or misty. If weather slows down your system, or you just accept the fact that in Los Angeles, we go nearly all year without any rain, you can change many of these factors. You can go down to the bad weather and set them all to 0.0. You can remove the transition state lines in fair, and then remove all of the other weather types. Or you can find your own happy medium that you prefer. ----- Remember to save the file to the same location and if you changed the file name to .txt, remember to put it back as .xml I hope that helps, Mike
21. Hmm it's either Goose Creek PD or Berkeley County Sheriffs Dept.
22. You're joking right? Honestly, you've got to be joking.... There are NO Smart Cars in use by the Los Angeles Police Department --- There is a car known as a "Smart Car" that is being tested by the LAPD, it's a Crown Vic with special cameras and toys, but it's definitely not that thing you showed.
23. Hi there, and welcome to the Forums. As a former member of RRU who wore the Khaki and Green as well as the Navy before going over to County, I'd like to address some of the issues you mention. You say it'd be more realistic, which is defined as: portraying an object like it is in everyday life. You are correct in stating that the USFS handles all Federal Forest Land, such as the Los Padres, where as the California Dept of Forestry and Fire Protection, a State Agency, handles all State Responsibility Area land which includes a wide mix of timber, forest, brush, mountains, and even cities as a full function Fire and EMS department with many City and County (35!) contracts throughout the State of California. Here... is where I am a bit confused. Can you tell me what State units are stationed in the Los Angeles area in any way, shape or form? Living in the city of Los Angeles, and working in a Mutual aid zone with County and City, I've never seen a CDF apparatus stationed with the LAFD. The nearest CAL fire units are in Riverside Co, San Diego Co, San Bernardino, or San Luis Obispo to the north. . Compare that to the Angeles National Forest which shares a common border with Los Angeles City. In the areas of the 210 Corridor up to the 5 freeway and through out the Angeles Crest, USFS firefighters respond direct mutual aid to all Wildland Urban Interface incidents at time of dispatch along with Los Angeles City and County units. With an USFS response time measured in minutes, and many times having them arrive on scene as quickly as the LAFD and LACoFD units, it doesn't compare to the CDF units which respond to brush fires in the City and County limits in hours after initial time of dispatch. I believe that an USFS Crew bus may be worked on in the not-so near future to further develop the USFS contingent in the game, especially with so many type I and II crews working in the ANF. As for the USFS, with 2 Type I engines, and a type 3 already in the game, I'm not sure what having an OES rig would provide except that they look different, especially those weird Westates rigs. LACoFD now has 5 Type III OES Engines modeled after the CDF Model 34/35 configuration. They're currently assigned up north and have been getting pretty rave reviews from the crews on them. That might be one option. And they're not bad one, but as this is an LA mod, the key has always been to accurately reflect the Los Angeles Area, which unfortunately, unless it is a major fire incident, like the 2003, 2005 and 2007 fires or disaster, like the Northridge Earthquake, Cal Fire does not have a presence in this county. LACoFD is the designated SRA manager for this area which explains why they recieved the Type IIIs and have such a large wildland/forestry program and Camp Crew program. Mike
24. Can you be more specific by what you mean regarding LED patterns don't work? Do you not see any flashing lights? Realistic is defined as: portraying an object like it is in everyday life. The sirens in 1.5 were unrealistic in that they were not the ones used by Los Angeles units and even included some tones that were illegal in this state. The tones from 1.4 and now 1.6 are damn near spot on from what we utilize in this area, which makes them realistic. If you like the unrealistic tones from 1.5, they have been included as well and please see the main thread on how to install them. Mike
