enable select mode (spacebar)

go into mode 3 (key 3) select, none

then, select single, reselect those you need

Modify submech, detach, be sure none of the cases are enabled and click on the model

go into mode 1 (key 1) and click on the vehicle

now edit the uv map

:) This should work

there is no need to attach them, if you do like i sayd, nothing visual should happen, its just that the program will know it has to detach those polys for reskin or any other operation, but the polys will still look attached for you :)

Yes, because the polygons which haven't been selected are attached to the polygons you want to uv-map you will get a weird result. Detaching them right before you are going to uv-map them fixes this problem. This is also written in my tutorial. :)
