Lone Star College System's Paramedic Programs

The Lone Star College System's emergency medical services (EMS) department offers emergency medical technician (EMT) certificate programs at the basic, intermediate and paramedic levels. All of the programs provide students with substantial clinical experience.

Emergency Medical Services Professions Paramedic Certificate

At 39 credits in length, this program equips students with the knowledge and skills to assess patients, provide emergency care and transport victims of an accident or illness to a hospital. Topics include airway management, patient assessment, emergency pharmacology, EMS operation, trauma management, medical emergencies and assessment based management. Students are prepared to assist adult, pediatric, special-need and geriatric patients. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to seek paramedic certification.

Emergency Medical Services Associate of Applied Science

This 67-credit program covers the same EMS coursework as the paramedic certificate program, as well as general education courses in sociology and American government. Students are required to complete a 6-credit prerequisite semester of courses that cover basic EMT skills and knowledge. Graduates, who are eligible to seek certification as either an EMT or paramedic, should be prepared to respond to accidents and other emergency situations upon completion of the program.

Austin Community College District's Paramedic Programs
Austin Community College District's Health Sciences program offers a variety of academic programs in dental hygiene, medical laboratory technology, surgical technology, health information technology and magnetic resonance imaging. EMS certificate and degree programs are available for those interested in becoming a paramedic.
EMT Paramedic Certificate
This program prepares graduates to seek certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and become a professional EMT - Paramedic. Emphasis is placed on preparing students to assess and treat nervous system, endocrine, cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies. Additional topics covered include infectious diseases, toxicology, pharmacology, airway management, medical terminology, emergency procedures and cardiology.
Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services
An Associate of Applied Science in Emergency Medical Services degree prepares graduates for a career as a paramedic by combining classroom instruction with extensive clinical field experiences. In addition to the core courses in the paramedic certificate program, students must also complete general education and emergency medical services requirements. Additional coursework includes college mathematics, English composition, weight training, end of life issues, oral communication and pediatric advanced life support.
