When you open the editor, load a map and start editing, you are editing your core game. You shouldn't do this, the core game is your starting point (when modding). If you change your default install, you are better off reinstalling. It is always advisable to keep the default version intact.

When you open the editor, create a mod, exit, rerun the editor and load that mod (just to make sure), and then load the map and edit it, you are editing your own mod. It will show under mods in the game menu, showing the name you gave it. If you only edited a little bit, then your game will be just the same as default, only with the changes you did.

Do read the tutorial section of this forum, there is a good thread on general mod structure there. Should give you an idea of how this particular game gets modded : ) Should you feel it's too tricky, feel free to PM me.
