  2. Collapse, Fire Heavily Damage Sykesville Freedom District Fire Station

    By Firefighter Bill Rehkopf

    February 11, 2010

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department was heavily damaged in a fire following the collapse of the roof of the social hall, Thursday morning, February 11.

Fire officials say the roof of the hall was weighted down by over three feet of snow, and collapsed shortly before 8:00 this morning. Fire and EMS crews were on a cardiac arrest call at the time, but several personnel were at the station and heard the collapse. The building was quickly evacuated.

The 2 inch natural gas service into the building was sheared off by the collapse. Firefighters attempted to shut of the service at the meter, but it was too dangerous to approach due to the partially collapsed wall. Fire crews then set up hose lines as a precaution while they awaited the arrival of the gas company.

At approximately 8:20, the fire broke out in the collapsed social hall. The leaking natural gas fed the fire, which allowed it to spread quickly. The fire went to two alarms, and eventually to three to bring extra manpower to the scene.

Utility crews from BGE quickly arrived, but had to dig up a portion of Route 32 (Sykesville Road) in front of the fire station to access the shutoff valve. Eventually, the line was shut down around 12:00 pm, allowing firefighters to access the building to put out the fire.

The social hall was completely destroyed by the fire, which also spread to the adjoining administrative wing and men's bunk room. The station's day room, TV room, kitchen and classroom all received significant smoke and water damage. A damage estimate has not been made available.

Fortunately, all of the department's fire and EMS equipment was moved out of the station safely, and the station was never out of service. In fact, Sykesville's two engines and tower truck actively participated in the firefight.

Over 200 firefighters and 50 pieces of equipment representing fire departments from four counties responded to the collapse and resulting fire. No one was injured.

Temporary living and office arrangements are being made on the site, and the company's apparatus will continue to be housed in the station.

The men and women of the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department would like to thank their fellow firefighters for their assistance today; and the greater fire service community for their thoughts and support.

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department assures the residents of Southern Carroll County that we will continue to provide the quality fire and EMS protection they deserve and have come to expect.

  4. well that is a litttle overload there. Most places in the country or small citys. Let cadet ride along on appratus to calls. Having a pager. Once on scene cadets can connect engine to fire hydrant. Then bring tools up to the scene like fans ect. After the durration of the call wrap all the hose. Bassiclly You get to do any outside work. MVA you can retreive tools. Also knowing where I live in the country somtimes its only me and my dad on an engine from one sta. so if we arrived to somthing big rules may be broken. Like I've gone in a building and extinguished small fires like oven fires. Here it is like just volunteering

  5. I know we have in our department ems units able to transport 2 patients if both minorly injured or shortage on ems units. Was wondering if ther was a way to have that if it involved making 2 members of an engine crew able to get a stretcher and ride or you do in real life and create a backboard to place one on.

  6. Then i guess you should try to look at other possibilities.. because the installer works perfectly in both Win XP Home, Professional (32/64 bit) and Win 7 Home/Ultimate/Enterprise (32/64 bit)

In Win 7, sometimes you have to run the installer as Administrator, or add compatibility for Windows XP SP3. But, i did not have to do that. But i've heard people had to.

For me it happened when I had an old computer, then when I got a new one it stopped.
